The perils and pitfalls of installing Kuryarkin flame grips by Stan aged 52.

Decided on a little bling - and had the flame grips on my venerable old speedmaster - since traded into a beautiful thunderbird painted in the go-fast color of black, so decided that flame grips on the thunderbird would add at least 10hp to the back wheel.

So sent an email to fast eddy and the flame grips were on their way - along with the the dual throttle boss (palm heel rest) and a bar-end helmet lock.

I can heartily recommend eddy BTW - great communications and a good price - he is one of us so use him!

Anyway - once the big bird arrived across the pacific with my shipment I commenced installation.

Being a coward, I decided to do the left hand bar first - apart from the supplied glue being a little dry, this side went on easily - note that the triumph grips have to be removed with a knife - I doubt any normal human being could remove these any other way.

Anyway, the left bar now looks like this!

Now for the throttle side.

Problem 1 - the throttle barrel is covered with little nipples. Solution - cut em off!

So now (stupidly without testing) apply glue to grip and attempt to slide on. Got half an inch (with lots of pushing) and the glue decided to work!

After surgery, got the grip off again and did some investigation (after repairing grip butchery).

Sanded grip smooth(er) and tried test fitting. No go, it would not go on.

So decided to bite the bullet and removed the throttle barrel. More sanding eventuated - and a bit of dremel work.

Finally did a test fit and got the grip on the barrel. Could not get the grip off again because the grip and barrel had decided to become as one with each other.

Decided that glueing the grip to the barrel was vastly overrated and decided to leave well alone.

Trotted back to bike and gently slid complete assembly over bar. No I didnt - it appears that the rubber of the flames on the grip were exerting a small but sufficient pressure on the barrel to prevent the barrel turning on the bar.

Mucho wet-and-drying of the bars and the inside of the throttle barrel then ensued. |Insert a huge amount of time here>

Finally achieved sanding nirvana because the barrel would now turn.

Re-assembled throttle and opened a large can of applause.

It now looks like this!

Now after some discussion with eddy (who is quite upset about this) it has been determined that kuryarkin grips come with the throttle barrel - with the exception of the flame grips.

So the lesson for today children is - when ordering grips, make it easier on yourself and ensure that the throttle barrel is included.

Actually, I think the Triumph throttle sleeve is a little larger than others. When I put my "normal" Kurys on a week or two ago, there was considerable belt-sanding of the sleeve involved to make it work. It probably is .040-.050 larger than other bikes' sleeves.

I posted mine in a thread called "My Mods".

My Kury's were a 10 minute install. There was no drilling, sanding, or otherwise. But I think that's because I went with the Triumph kit and not hte universal one.... In fact, when I traded in my America, I pulled them off and plopped them on the Thunderbird. No problem - direct fit.

Cheers,

Martin

As Stan (and I found out) the reason for the sanding the ISO Flame is not the same as the ISO standard that is for the America or Speedy. Kuryakyn makes a specific model where it fits includes the new throttle sleeve (6236) . If you had to sand it was likely their Universal model, which is the same case for the ISO Flame above. The 6240's that aTaDude refers too are the universal grips and not the ones you would want for this bike. IF they are the ones for the America and the Speedy, that part number is: 6236 and that as I understand has the appropriate Throttle Grip included.

I have recently upgraded to a Storm from a Suzuki Intruder.
I have a near new set of 6235's that I removed before selling.
The 6235's are being mentioned here.
Can anyone tell me if the difference is unworkable as to my eye they seem to match pretty closely.

Funny, I don't remember being absent-minded.

Stan, next time you have to remove OEM LH grips, use compressed air with thin air blower, stick the blower barrel between grip and bar, blast air and move it around and the grip will just pop off.

Thanks Leethal - I have reserved a few brain cells to hold that as a memory.
